In Iraq, the famous Shatt al-Arab river and the Iraqi city of Basra are at the foothills. This city and river are symbols of Arab love and civilization.
According to the Saudi news agency SPA, numerous ancient and modern stories about Shatt al-Arab and Basra connect the Arab countries of the Gulf with Iraq.
The Shatt al-Arab is a river formed by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The upper reaches of the Euphrates meet the Tigris at the city of Qarna, 375 kilometers south of Baghdad. The lower reaches of Tigris and Euphrates meet at Qurmat Ali. This river is more than 190 kilometers long.
There are more than 14 million palm trees on the banks of the Shatt al-Arab. These are one-third of the total date trees in Iraq. They produce up to one and a half lakh tons of dates annually.
The latitude of Shatt al-Arab is different at different places. The lowest width is 400 meters in Al-Ashar and its channel is about 1500 meters wide in Al-Faw village in the Arabian Gulf. Its depth ranges from 9 meters to 10.75 meters.
Many rivers, canals and irrigation canals originate from the Shatt al-Arab.
The canals originating from the Shatt al-Arab include Al-Shafi, Al-Majdiyya, Al-Rabaat, Al-Khandaq, Al-Ashar, Al-Harah, Al-Saraji, Hamdan, Al-Hamza, Abu-Mughira and Abu-Al-Khasib. All of them are located on the western bank of the Shatt al-Arab.
As far as the canals coming out of the eastern bank of Shatt al-Arab are concerned, among them Katiban, Al-Kabasi, Chota Shatt al-Arab are worth mentioning.
In the history books, the number of canals coming out of Shatt al-Arab and passing through Basra is 635. Of these, 470 are on the north side and 165 on the east side.
Shatt al-Arab is considered the main route from the northern coast of the Arabian Gulf to the plains of Iraq. It is also widespread in the plains of Syria. Its strategic importance is huge. It is compared to the huge reserves of Iraqi gasoline.
Shatta Al Arab has a prime location in the transportation and logistics services sectors. It gives rise to sea and land routes connecting the 3 continents.
Shatt al-Arab also has great importance in the field of agriculture. It is a confluence of two rivers. It is considered to be one of the great oases of the world.
