The comedy drama revolving around the life of an urban Babu in a remote village in India has become the center of attention and is now setting new records of popularity.
According to a latest review, the second season of the drama called 'Panchayat' has become the third most watched drama.
So far, the second season of Panchayat has been watched by more than three crore viewers and according to IMDB ratings, people are giving it 8.9 out of ten in the popularity rating, which is similar to popular serials 'House of Dragon' and ' The ratings for Stranger Things' fourth season are higher.
But what is it about Panchayat that crores of Indians have fallen in love with it?
The story of the play is very simple. After failing to find a good job in the city, Panchayat protagonist Abhishek Tripathi, who has an engineering degree, apparently takes a low-income government job in a remote village in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This role of a government officer is played by Jitendra Kumar.
Abhishek's salary is modest, but the three-room house he lives in is actually the dusty office of the local panchayat. The other people working in his office are less educated men. Here, Abhishek spends all day dealing with the local people's petty problems and his lonely nights are spent saving lives from frequent power outages and occasional snakes.
To get away from the dull village life, Abhishek starts preparing for an exam for which he stays up all night.
But as days turn into weeks and weeks into months, Abhishek's revulsion begins to subside, new friendships are made, and then the possibility of romance in his life.
In a country where the gap between urban and rural life is stark, 'Panchayat' offers a glimpse of rural life to its viewers who live in cities and have little insight into rural life.
This story of a young civil servant and his naive friends, with a touch of humor and compassion, seems to have won the hearts of the audience.
Chandigarh resident and retired lecturer in English literature, Neel Kamalpuri says that she too watched the play during the Corona pandemic.
"The world around us had closed in, and there seemed to be darkness everywhere, so I felt that we all needed that kind of drama." There was something about it that felt good to look at.'
And the best part is that Panchayat is a great show that stands out because of the 'great acting'.
According to Neel Kamal Puri, 'We see the best balance in this series. It neither romanticizes nor denigrates village life. Its humor is very lively, but it does not appear to be tongue-in-cheek as the play deals with 'very serious issues'.
Writer and film commentator, Sibal Chatterjee says, "Everyone has gone crazy for this show because it is so close to reality and everyone can see themselves in it."
According to Sabil Chatterjee, since the show speaks to the middle ground, it shows simple stories of ordinary people. These types of games used to be very popular in the 1980s and 90s, but then they died out and were replaced by family drama and action.
"Nowadays, most of the dramas feature detective and crime stories, so you are pleasantly surprised when you see Panchayat in the midst of action and action-packed shows." The story of Panchayat revolves around real characters doing very real things.
And what's special about it is that it has great depth, but at the same time it's full of humor and doesn't go overboard with the mood of the audience. It deals with serious issues, but in a very light-hearted way. This show is funny but the thought is very serious.
The head of the panchayat of Phalira is a woman, but the real power rests in the hands of her husband and how to manipulate the power is not determined by where it is needed, but by what is seen. Who are the important personalities of the village?
We see that the people involved in the panchayat are actually the rich people of the village but it looks like they don't even have money for basic needs.
According to scriptwriter Chandan Kumar, the creator of Panchayat, he wanted to make a show that would give people a peek into rural life but "not have too much of a preachy element to it."
"We wanted it to be funny because people watch shows to be entertained, but it's hard to escape from serious issues."
Chandankumar says that the characters of Panchayat are not based on real people, but there are real events behind the things shown in the play.
Of the play's protagonist, Abhishek, Mr. Kumar said, "He's going through a transition, it's his first job, so I wanted to show how he deals with adversity and what he learns from it." learns.'
Neel Kamalpuri says she is looking forward to the third season of Panchayat, which will be aired this year.
Although Chandankumar did not reveal when the third season will begin, he promises that 'this story will continue for the next few seasons.'
