Bollywood's 'King' Shah Rukh Khan's new film 'Pathan' is currently the center of attention of fans and critics with record business in one day and reviews based on different opinions are being discussed.
Shah Rukh is back in Indian films after four years and many aspects of this film are being talked about. Even before it hit the big screen, the film became a topic of discussion.
Film analysts say that it can be counted among the super hit films of 2023.
Although some critics have raised objections to the story of the film, many fans have said that Shah Rukh has once again graced the cinema halls.
Film analyst Shubhra Gupta wrote in the Indian Express that 'Bollywood is back. Shah Rukh is Back.'' means that both Bali and Shah Rukh Khan have returned from this film.
The film also stars Deepika Padukone and John Ibrahim in prominent roles, but the lead role of Pathan is played by Shah Rukh, who is on an intelligence mission to stop a terrorist attack against India.
The trailer of the film has been viewed more than five million times on YouTube.
Film analyst Taran Adarsh has said that the film was released on 8000 screens worldwide. This is the biggest opening for a Bollywood film.
According to Yash Raj Films, Pathan earned Rs 106 crore on its first day of release in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, which is the "biggest opening in the history of Hindi cinema".
He wrote in a tweet that this is the "biggest opening for any Hindi film". That too when there was no holiday on that day nor was it a sequel to a big film.
Majority of the movie goers have liked it. "Shah Rukh Khan's acting, Salman Khan's entry (who has a guest appearance in the film) and Deepika's Kamal dance were all great," a fan told the BBC. It is a complete family film that you can watch with kids and elders too.
However, some people did not like the story and dialogues of the film. "It's an average film," said one person. The people are beautiful but the movie is not so beautiful. Story, screenplay not so good. It is a very fast-paced film.
Cinema owners have said that demand for the film was so high that they had to arrange extra shows while many fans are still missing out on tickets due to pre-booking.
On Wednesday, Shah Rukh himself said in a tweet that 25 single-screen theaters have been opened in North India for the screening of Pathan, which were closed during Covid-19.
Not only this, Pathan has also created a new record of its kind in advance bookings. Ticketing platform BookMyShow told news agency PTI that the public response to the film has been unprecedented and they had booked more than 1 million tickets in advance till Monday.
What do film critics say?
Shubhra Gupta has said that the film has non-stop action and charming stars as well as a hero trying to save the world. His great songs and emotional scenes have inspired people.
While Deepanjana Paul said that Pathan is the hero that Indian cinema needs today. He wrote that 'the place of the romantic hero has been taken by a sensible and strict person who wants to fulfill his responsibility in any case.'
Some people believe that parts of the film are incomprehensible fiction. Uday Bhatia for the newspaper Mint Lounge wrote that the film has a lot of entertainment and espionage elements, that too to a silly extent.
Nandini Ramantha said that at one point in the film, the stunts and screenplay bore the audience. "But whenever Pathan's action scenes and Abbas Tyrwala's brilliant dialogues come and the hero speaks, the film gets back on track," he wrote for the website Scroll.
Fans have also shared videos on social media in which people are dancing to 'Jhume Jo Pathan' and 'Be Sharm Rang' with Shah Rukh and Deepika in a cinema hall.
A record business of 100 crores on the first day and riots in some places
In India, the film's production house Hush Raj Films said that the Hindi version of the film earned Rs 55 crore on its first day, while the other languages earned Rs 2 crore. While on foreign screens it earned around 36 crores.
By earning 106 crores on the first day, it has surpassed all previous Hindi films.
Filmmaker Karan Johar, who is considered close to Shah Rukh Khan, has praised the entire team of Pathan for crossing 100 crores. He congratulated Shah Rukh, Deepika, John Ibrahim and Yash Raj Films. Similarly, Kamal Hassan has also praised the Pathan team.
Ever since the trailer and songs of the film came out, the controversy has started and there were riots at some places during the screening on Wednesday.
In Karnataka, a case was filed against 30 people for stopping the screening of the film and damaging public property.
In Haryana too, a case was registered against a right-wing group that tore down Pathan posters in a mall.
Extremist Hindu groups had protested against Pathan even before the release. Deepika was criticized for wearing a saffron colored bikini in the song 'Be Sharm Rang'. He accused Shah Rukh of insulting Hindus because they consider the color saffron sacred.
However, the scenes that were being objected to were not deleted from this song in the cinema.
A case of fake reviews:
Some fact-checkers in India have also pointed out that reviews of old movies are being shared on social media by faking it as a Pathan review in which people are reacting negatively to another movie.
Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubair has said on Twitter that the audience reaction to Shahrukh's earlier films 'Zero' and 'Jab Harry Met Sejal' is being repeated for this work, in which people say it is bad. There is a movie.
A fake tweet read 'SRK big fan reviews Pathan' but it was actually Roohi's review in which a person says it's a useless film.
Similarly, in a video, a woman returning from watching a movie says to the camera, 'Nonsense, one moment nonsense. There was nothing in the film.' But later Muhammad Zubair said that the video of the woman was actually made when she was returning from watching Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt's Brahmastra.
